Eligible for Medicare

You are entitled to premium free Part A when you have received Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits for 24 months.
You will be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part B after receiving disability benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board for two years. Most people pay monthly for Medicare Part B. The premium for Medicare Part B is $110.50* in 2010. This monthly premium is deducted from your Social Security, Railroad Retirement, or Civil Service Retirement check. If you choose not to enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period because you have health insurance through your own or a family member's current active employment, you may be able to sign up for Medicare Part B at a later time during the Special Enrollment Period.
