Paris: Physicians Are Not Vending Machines

In a new article in the Journal of Perinatology, John Paris and colleagues respond to Robert Truog's provocative New England Journal of Medicine piece in which he defends providing futile CPR for a 2-year-old-boy who "might already be dead."

Paris et al. argue that physician behavior must be moored to "facts" and to "scientific reality."  The role of the physician is not only to make a diagnosis but also to "provide a recommendation" on what should be done.  Not all decisions must or even should be placed onto the shoulders of the family.
