Analyzing a Web Site
When analyzing a web site there are four criteria you need to look for: Authority, Accuracy, Currency and Objectivity. (University, 2003 - 2010). When I was looking for a web site I found the following: www.bt.cdc.gov. This web site contains information pertaining to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Your Online Source for Credible Health Information ... This site is intended to increase the Nation’s ability to prepare for specific hazards. The Official Web Portal • Department of Health And Human Services ... (Control, 2009). This site helps people or companies to determine or report hazards such as bioterrorism, chemical emergencies, radiation emergencies, mass causalities, natural disasters and severe weather, and recent outbreaks and incidents. According to the Widener University’s Wolf gram Library I believe that this web site is accurate and current, and the authority is true. You will notice when you are looking over the site it is easy to see that it contains other links and all information needed to make contact with certain individuals who you may need. You are able to access the CDC’s home page, specific hazard pages, more sites to help you become more prepared. There are links to pages that will help you understand what the CDC is currently doing and why. You are able to receive and send emails, and also able to report any emergencies by phone, emails, and always by regular mail.
According to the Widener University (University, 2003 - 2010). Because this site contains those links listed above it is safe to say that this web site is true and accurate. I found it to be easy to navigate my way through the site and access information that would be needed in any crisis situation. This web sites relevance and value would be needed to anyone who works with people who come into contact with any type of chemicals, hazardous material of any sorts, and anything that might be harmful to not only them but places that people live in. This site would be accessed by companies such as the red cross, or salvation army. The national weather service, and any news stations or newspaper organizations. These places would need to access this site for the purpose of reporting crisis situations to the public and helping us to become aware of any problems that might be arising. This site offers it’s information in not only English but you are able to translate it to 11 different languages. This site is accessible to anyone who may need it. As proof of this site being used by these types of organizations and companies just take a look at our nation’s history of disasters. How did we find out about what was going on in all of the places. Disasters like hurricane Katrina, 9-11 ground zero. The oil spill in the gulf of Mexico by BP oil company. And we can never forget the day we went to war. After looking at this site it was easy to see why it is needed and why people would need to use it. Even though I never knew about it, until now, I am happy that I discovered it.
