Obama’s new debt-reduction plan to draw contrasts with Republican vision

President Obama on Monday will unveil a plan to tame the nation's rocketing federal debt that will draw a sharp contrast with the Republican vision and amount more to an opening play in the fall's debate over the economy than another attempt at finding common ground with the opposing party.

The president will propose $1.5 trillion in new taxes as part of a plan to find at least $3 trillion in budget savings over a decade, according to a person familiar with the matter. Combined with his call earlier this month for $450 billion in new stimulus, the proposal represents a more populist approach to confronting the nation's economic travails than the compromises he advocated this summer.

Hope of Lee image’s buyer: The price will rise again

Richard Schaffer was only looking for a violin this month when he stumbled on a Civil War photograph up for auction on the Goodwill Industries Web site.

It was an elegant image of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in his uniform, with a white beard, furrowed brow and circles of fatigue under his eyes.

Schaffer, a veteran collector who pilots a D.C. fireboat and runs a restaurant in Harpers Ferry, had never seen the image before. Was this a lost photo of Lee? Could it be a blockbuster discovery, a treasure among odds and ends?

Colombian mountain cyclists try to pedal out of poverty toward glory in Europe

DUITAMA, Colombia — In the Andean mountains of central Colombia, where life's options range from potato farming to herding goats, boys like Johan Cardenas dream of cycling to glory in the French Alps and Pyrenees.

They ride at dawn's first light for 30 or 40 miles, or often 70, much of it up narrow mountain passes. Then they go again the next day, and the day after, with one goal in mind: to someday be good enough to compete in the great bicycle races of Europe.

Can Obama calm Democratic panic?

With apologies to Winston Churchill: The talk in the political class is that this is the beginning of the end of the Obama administration, while the talk in the Obama administration is that this is the end of the beginning. Which will it be?

Last week was not exactly what President Obama hoped for when he rolled out his big jobs initiative. He expected pushback from Republicans. He did not anticipate the resistance he is getting from Democrats — or, perhaps more to the point, he did not expect the questions about the bill that might inevitably arise on his side to get quite so much attention.
