FDA Approves Anticlotting Brilinta from AstraZeneca to Compete with Plavix

From what I am reading here aspirin is also prescribed to be taken with the drug per the clinical trial information supplied.  The data cited here is conflicting too with US imagepatients not doing as well as others with the medication but higher doses of aspirin were maybe the culprit?  The drug is to be taken to thin blood to help avoid heart attacks, strokes and other deaths from cardiovascular issues.  BD

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved AstraZeneca PLC's anticlotting drug Brilinta.

Brilinta, also known by its generic name ticagrelor, is regarded as a key product for AstraZeneca to help offset expiring patents on some of the company's best-selling medicines including its antipsychotic drug Seroquel. Brilinta is sold under the brand name Brilique outside the U.S.

The drug was approved with the FDA's toughest boxed warning, discussing bleeding risks and stating that aspirin doses above 100 milligrams reduce the product's effectiveness.

Brilinta is designed to keep blood platelets from sticking together in order to prevent blood clots that can lead to heart attacks and strokes. It was approved for patients diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome.
