This was an entire truckload, big loss here and insurance doesn’t cover this as I spent enough time in logistics to know the answer here when looking for insurance reimbursement. The usual is that everyone eats a third and shares the loss, so Walgreens, Alcon and the trucking company have this to deal with. I had a truckload of Toshiba products stolen years ago when still in that business and it was a mess and a lot of bad feelings as a result due to the cost. Things might be a little different now. Novartis just stated their eye care was boosting their results but this will take a big chunk out of next quarter’s results.
Would have been nice if bar codes were on the products so they could be easily identified when someone tried to scan one. It doesn’t appear that there are any heavy pain drugs in the mix as those seem to go at a premium these days but chances are the drugs are probably out of the country by now as these types of thieves usually are very sophisticated and the Cargo Cat enforcement folks are usually all over this and do a good job recovering when it is possible. If you want to read up on bar codes and how they can help identify stolen goods, check out the links below and try to figure out why nobody in the drug and device business has tried this yet. BD
